Ian was joined by writer David Hagberg, who talked about the former Soviet Union, US-Russia relations, and the Russian military mindset.
Hagberg said Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has been using petrodollars to re-modernize Russia's military and refurbish their nuclear weapons. Though he does not expect a shooting war to break out between Russia and United States anytime soon, Hagberg did express fear that we may once again find ourselves in a nuclear standoff with Russia. The future of war is economic, Hagberg continued, noting how the United States bankrupted the former Soviet Union by focusing on defense spending.
Hagberg also discussed the recent conflict between Georgia and Russia, America's "provocative" anti-missile system in Poland, and Russia's claim to natural resources in the North Pole, as well as his book, Mutiny: The True Events That Inspired The Hunt For Red October. Hagberg co-wrote the book with Boris Gindin, a former Soviet naval officer who was aboard the Russian warship Storozhevoy when a mutiny was led by Captain Valery Sablin. Election Suspension?
First hour guest, author Jim Marrs discussed the federal bailout plan, and a possible suspension of this year's presidential election. Marrs acknowledged that the November 4th elections could be postponed by President Bush, but believes they will go on as planned. Marrs suggested voters write in Congressman Ron Paul instead of voting for either of the democrat or republican presidential candidates.

Two Ithaca, New York, residents have been released on bond after refusing to answer questions about their immigration status as they attempted to board a domestic flight in Texas. Omar Figueredo and Nancy Morales were stopped twice by Border Patrol agents before they could proceed to a security checkpoint at an airport in Brownsville. Both times they refused to disclose their citizenship status. The first time, they missed their flight. After returning a second time and refusing to answer again, they were arrested by police and held for roughly seven hours. They documented both incidents on video. Democracy Now! spoke with Omar Figueredo after he was released on Tuesday.
Omar Figueredo: "What I was really trying to accomplish was to put into question the authority that the Border Patrol has to harass and to force people to answer questions that they don't have to answer when they're traveling within the 60-to-100-mile border zone in the U.S."
Both Omar Figueredo and Nancy Morales are U.S. citizens. Omar said his action was part of a larger trend of people refusing to answer what they say are unwarranted and racially targeted questions at Border Patrol checkpoints, and then uploading video footage online.

Cyprus blood boiling over the banks as Europe sinks deeper into Debt Crisis
Protesters shouting "Troika go home!" marched though Nicosia's old town on Tuesday calling on other citizens to join them. They were venting their anger over the terms of Cyprus' EU bailout deal. The country had faced bankruptcy and ejection from the single currency, but although the deal has been struck, a grim economic future still awaits the Mediterranean island. Andros Iannou of the "Wake up Cyprus" group said: "The major demand of the people is that a referendum is held, nothing should be passed unless the people pass it. We will not sell off Cyprus financially because some others have committed to selling it off." Laiki bank is being wound down to merge with the Bank of Cyprus as part of the deal. Governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus Panicos Demetriades said this would create a "very strong bank," but enraged employees tried to push past police lines to call for his resignation. One of the protesters said: "We just want our jobs and nothing else, keep the bank operating." Cyprus' banks have been ordered to remain closed until Thursday and after that there will still be as-yet-undisclosed capital controls imposed to prevent depositors emptying the vaults.
