A police union spokesman said surveillance footage of the attacker showed him as tall and bearded, aged about 35, possibly of North African origin and wearing a white Arab-style tunic.
(BBC) French authorities are investigating whether the stabbing of a soldier in a Paris suburb was a copycat attack in the wake of the murder of Dummer Lee Rigby, killed in London this week.
The soldier was on patrol in the area of La Defense when he was stabbed in the neck by an unknown man who escaped.
His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
French President Francois Hollande said all possibilities were being explored but warned against hasty conclusions.
The 23-year-old was patrolling in uniform with two colleagues in the suburban railway station at La Defense late on Saturday afternoon.
He was attacked from behind by a man wielding a knife or a box-cutter. The assailant, whose identity is unknown, ran away and is being sought by police.
No motive has been established for the attack.
Mr Hollande said every hypothesis must be investigated, but no link had yet been established to the murder of Drummer Lee Rigby in the Woolwich area of London on Wednesday.
"I don't think at this stage that there can be a link, but we're examining all the elements and we're asking our soldiers to increase their level of vigilance," he said, while on an official visit to Ethiopia.
Shortly after the attack on Drummer Rigby, a man was filmed nearby saying he had carried out the attack because British soldiers killed Muslims every day.
Two men have been arrested and remain in hospital after they were shot by police.

A man who was struck 10 times by a baton-wielding police officer in Sacramento has died in custody.
Video obtained by Sacramento's CBS13 showed the man being struck multiple times by a female officer while a male officer restrained him Friday evening.
The man, who was in his 40s, was then handcuffed, at which point officers realized he was unresponsive. They rushed him to a hospital, where he died.
The Sacramento Bee reports that the fracas began Friday afternoon after a female clerk at a Metro PCS cell phone store called the cops.
Sacramento police spokesman Doug Morse told the Bee that officers arrived to the store on Folsom Blvd. to find the man holding the door to the store shut so they couldn't get in.
Police then forced their way inside. Morse said that's when the man became violent, and the altercation spilled out to the sidewalks.
Morse added that the Sacramento police department is investigating the man's death and, following protocol, the two officers involved in the suspect's apprehension have been placed on administrative leave.

MASS EXTINCTION PREDICTED THIS CENTURY!
A mass extinction happens when over 75 percent of all species on the planet die in a period of less than two million years. That may sound long to you, but it's the blink of an eye in geologic time. There have been five mass extinctions on Earth over the past 540 million years, sometimes caused by catastrophic disasters, and sometimes by quiet, insidious events like invasive species taking over the planet.
7. Earth Is Bubbling with Super Volcanoes
Yellowstone Park in the United States is actually a volcano caldera, a thin cork of earth that sits on top of a massive cache of broiling magma. And this super-volcano could blow any time. The last time Earth witnessed an explosion of this size was in 1812, when Mount Tambora in Indonesia erupted so profusely that the Earth's climate cooled for several years afterwards. Even more frightening is the prospect that another kind of super volcano, called a large igneous province (LIP), could become active sometime in the future.
A now-inactive LIP, called the Siberian Traps, erupted 250 million years ago. It spewed so much sulfur, carbon other greenhouse gases into the air that the Earth experienced a climate change catastrophe, vacillating wildly between extreme heat and cold until 95 percent of all life had died. This mass extinction was so bad it's been nicknamed "the Great Dying" by geologists. Yellowstone is not a LIP, but if it explodes into a super eruption, the damage will be incredible. Super volcanoes are an ever-present threat, that have haunted the Earth for millions of years.
6. Invasive Species Are Everywhere
On Earth, humans have aggressively invaded every continent except Antarctica, swelling our population to over 7 billion individuals and eating everything in sight. Corporatism has transformed our capitalist system into this fascist nightmare. CORPORATIONS trough lobbying efforts effectively write US laws. Guess whom those laws are going to benefit? When PRIVATE entity controls money supply of a nation as great as US there is no wonder those banks that own Fed are untouchable everywhere in the World. Hence bailouts for them and bills for the rest of us. His last point is really where his analysis is disintegrating. He wants it both ways. In Soviet Union and other communist countries production was controlled by state or public and was directed even on net loss(negative profit), in US most of drug making companies are PRIVATE, and work for PROFIT which is the case for most other companies and industries too. And that is main thing that differentiates sovietized economy from a capitalist one. In conclusion he does not distinguish between small business and corporations. I agree that small business is overburdened by laws and rules but those rules in capitalism are imposed trough lobbying efforts on government by big CORPORATIONS doing everything to preserve their monopoly. So small business and state in age of globalization are both effectively victims of CORPORATIVISM.
